Conjugated Polymers for Lateral Flow Immunoassays

In a modern medical environment patients are not patient anymore, but want immediate diagnosis as well as treatment with medicine for faster cure independant of the need. Following the patients demands doctors more often skip the necessary laboratory tests on pathogens. The easy availability of broad-spectrum antibiotics then often leads to prescription of these even in the case of viral infections. This is not only a waste of ressources and stressful for the patients body, but does also increase the propability of the development and distribution of multidrug resistant microbes. To address this problem a system is needed for fast identification of pathogens at the point of care. With respect to the time needed for analysis as well as the ease of handling lateral flow immunoassays have proven to be a good choice, while being inferior in term of sensitivity and quantification when compared to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays or polymerase chain reaction. Therefore the first aim of the project is to develop nanosensors that make lateral flow immunoassays sensitive enough for clinical application. Furthermore a design of the assay is to be found that enables quantification of several pathogens on one test strip.
