Research Projects
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease and, despite being curable, is still considered a global public health emergency. The long duration of treatment combined with toxic effects can hamper patient life-style and induces patient non-compliance or microbial resistance. New strategies to combat the disease include the use of nanotechnology techniques representing a new tool to solve problems related to the TB treatment. The use of lipid nanocarriers provides several advantages such as protection of the compounds degradation, increased bioavailability and controlled drug-release. The project aims to produce, characterize and test the toxicity of lipid nanocarriers functionalized with WGA lectin to target macrophages.
