The Biopharmaceutics Group at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, led by Prof. Dr. Christian Wischke, performs research on biomedical materials, polymer-based drug delivery systems, and implantable medical devices. Their work focuses on developing multifunctional carriers that enable controlled release of therapeutics, immunomodulation, and tissue regeneration.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christian Wischke
A key research line focuses on introducing advanced functional properties into drug delivery systems—such as responsiveness to physical stimuli. By synthesizing and engineering polymeric materials that react to specific triggers like changes in pH, temperature, or other biochemical stimuli, the group aims to enable time- or location-specific drug release, improving therapeutic precision and minimizing side effects. This research line also includes the engineering and combination of established materials to realize specific functions, while investigating in depth the fundamental basis for establishing structure-function relationships in a pharmaceutical context. This also includes the bioresponse that foreign materials create after application to humans, such as via protein adsorption or cellular recognition, as well as their modulation by surface engineering.
Another key research line focuses on the design of polymeric carriers tailored to the specific properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients and the requirements associated with specific (medical) applications. By selecting suitable materials, structuring them on different hierarchical levels to create carrier systems – specifically those intended for local release – and investigating their performance in terms of controlled release, the Wischke lab addresses application-driven needs with adaptable, material-based solutions. Implants and micro-/nanoparticles, including carriers prepared by self-designed and self-fabricated microfluidic set-ups, are the workhorses in this research line.
Through this interdisciplinary approach, bridging pharmaceutical technology, materials science, and medicine, the group contributes significantly to innovations in biopharmaceutics and controlled drug delivery.
